When Paramount launched their micro-budget film division Insurge I was expecting a launchpad for young, inventive filmmakers to execute their ideas with the provided budgets around $100,000. They stated the venture was inspired by Paranormal Activity, but it looks like they went ahead and made a film that looks to rip it off and many small-budget horror movie elements in the last few years.

In The Devil Inside we have everything from the “true story” angle to the exorcism and catholic backbone to bringing the “experts” that end up getting tortured. There are hints of The Last Exorcism, Insidious and the Activity series it is modeled after. Will William Brent Bell‘s horror film succeed like the others? With a budget so low, it is hard to see it completely failing. But as for compelling storytelling and franchise potential, I’m not so sure. Check out the trailer and poster below via Apple and let us know what you think.

The Devil Inside hits theaters January 6th, 2011.

What do you think of the trailer? Will Paramount’s experiment work out?
