Returning to feature filmmaking four years after his Oscar-nominated drama The Class, we had high hopes for Laurent Cantet’s Foxfire — even placing it on our most-anticipated fall festival title feature. But with its TIFF debut long gone with little buzz, we’re hoping a new trailer will ignite US distributors to grab this adaptation of Joyce Carol Oates‘ highly-regarded novel.
Telling the story of a girl gang in 1950s upstate New York as they learn to stand up and hold their ground despite much opposition, the film looks to be one of the more spirited efforts from Cantet. He’s already got skill at telling coming-of-age stories and this looks to be another promising one, as he once again uses mostly unknown actors. Thanks to The Playlist for alerting us on the trailer and check it out below, along with some new stills and a poster.
Foxfire will hit theaters in France on January 2nd, with a US release hopefully in the near future.
