With the tragic passing of Tony Scott, we were hoping that his planned reboot of the classic western The Wild Bunch was shelved. But as Hollywood tends to do, they are moving forward with the needless update and have a major star already attached to lead and produce.
According to The Wrap, Warner Bros. have hooked in Will Smith to take on this reboot, originally helmed by Sam Peckinpah. While no director has been set yet, this one will also be set on the Texas-Mexico border and, of course, in the present day. Involving drug cartels, the lead role is one of a “disgraced D.E.A. agent,” which we assume Smith will be grabbing.
Originally scripted by David Ayer and Brian Helgeland taking on the latest draft, expect updates on this one soon. We recently saw Smith bow out of another western, Django Unchained, due to not being the star so it sounds like he’s more content with this scenario. If it has half the sheer brilliance of The Wild Wild West, count us in and in the meantime, check out a trailer for the original below.
