Yesterday we got the trailer for Spike Jonze‘s Her and today we know when we’ll be able to see the highly-anticipated drama for the first time. After opening with Captain Phillips and holding a centerpiece for The Secret Life of Walter Mitty, Film Society of Lincoln Center announced today that they’ll close their 51st New York Film Festival with the Joaquin Phoenix-led film on October 15th. Check out quotes from those involved below and return for our review from the festival, plus see an interview with Jonze here.

NYFF Director of Programming and Selection Committee Chair Kent Jones:

“Like many people I’ve come to expect great and surprising things from Spike Jonze, but Her is something altogether new in cinema. To discuss even a little bit of the plot—let’s just say that it’s about lonely people and artificial intelligence—is to deprive first-time viewers of the opportunity of discovering it themselves. The tone is magical, the freedom of the narrative is breathtaking, Joaquin Phoenix continues to be one of the most adventurous actors in movies, Rooney Mara and Amy Adams are unforgettable, Scarlett Johansson’s voice will break your heart, and so will this impossibly delicate, funny, daring movie.”

Director Spike Jonze:

“I’m very excited that it’s a premiere in the city. The New York Film Festival is where we premiered our first movie and that’s really special. It was our first U.S. premiere of Being John Malkovich and we had all our friends there and it feels so nice to come back to NYFF.”

In the not so distant future, Theodore (Phoenix), a lonely writer purchases a newly developed operating system designed to meet the user’s every needs. To Theodore’s surprise, a romantic relationship develops between him and his operating system. This unconventional love story blends science fiction and romance in a sweet tale that explores the nature of love and the ways that technology isolates and connects us all.

Her arrives on November 20th.
