We’ll get to see his work later this month when the trailer for Shane Black‘s Iron Man 3 hits, but scribe Drew Pearce is now keeping busy with another major tentpole. Variety reports that Legendary has hired the screenwriter to rewrite Monsters director Gareth Edward‘s next monster movie, the big-budget Godzilla.

Pearce has become a bit of a go-to man of Warner Bros. projects, also working on the third iteration for Sherlock Holmes. As for Godzilla, not much is known, but David Callaham (The Expendables), David S. Goyer (Man of Steel, Batman Begins) and Max Borensetein (The Seventh Son) have all had their hands on the script.

The studio is reportedly very happy with the current script, but this rewrite is intended to increase the age of our main characters “so that they fit the prototype of the actors” that the studio desires. It sounds like Pearce has his work cut out for him and as we heard from the Comic-Con footage, Edwards is going with a darker take, with the shown reel including destroyed landscapes evoking an almost 9/11 feel.

Godzilla invades on May 16th, 2014, likely in 3D.
