One of the biggest success stories of last summer was 20th Century Fox’s return to the X-Men franchise, but it was not an easy journey to production. Following up his comic book film Kick-Ass, director Matthew Vaughn briefly stepped down from helming the prequel X-Men: First Class, but then with a under a year until release, he came back and crafted one of the more enjoyable films of the summer.

According to Deadline, it looks like the next film in the series, X-Men: Days of Future Past, is having similar troubles. They report that Vaughn has stepped down once again from the director’s chair and now the studio’s top choice for a helmer is Bryan Singer, who was set to produce the blockbuster and actually wrote the initial treatment. As someone who guided X-Men and X2 to great success, he’s certainly a perfect fit for the series.

We’ve got no reason why Vaughn would not want the gig, but he also balked at the opportunity to helm Kick-Ass 2: Balls to the Wall and as we know, it ended up moving forward. One of his potential projects is a film version of Mark Millar‘s Secret Service comic, which he has been attached to for about a year now. Sources indicate that will be his next project for the studio, but we’ll have to wait and see what the future holds for both Singer and Vaughn.

With 20th Century Fox still pushing for a July 18th, 2014 release and the original cast returning, they better lock down their director soon and we’ll update if it indeed turns out to be Singer.

Do you want to see Singer direct the next X-Men film?
