Superhero movie fans were left scratching their heads when Shakespeare lover Kenneth Branagh was chosen to direct Marvel’s Thor. Now another high-brow filmmaker will make the transition to comic book territory with a film version of Fables.

Deadline reports that Nikolaj Arcel, the Danish director behind the Oscar nominated period drama A Royal Affair, is attached to helm the adaption of the award-winning series based off a script by Jeremy Slater. Fables, a DC/Vertigo publication created by writer Bill Willingham, follows a group of fairy tale and folklore figures who make a home in upstate New York after being forced out of their worlds. David Heyman and Jeffrey Clifford are on board to produce the project.

The new development is one of many attempts at getting the long-running fantasy publication on the big screen. In 2004, Warner Bros and the Jim Henson Company tried to make it happen, but they never made it to the writing stage. More recently, rumors had Harry Potter director David Yates attached to the film, but nothing more came from the buzz. Now that Arcel is on board, fans of the series can finally look forward to some real movement.

Have you read Fables? Do you think Arcel is a wise choice for the film?
