Since NBC announced they had commissioned a television adaptation of Bill Willingham’s graphic novel series Fables, not much has happened in the way of progress except to say ABC announced at the end of 2008 that they had picked up the rights and were developing a pilot. Rumor has emerged via Pajiba that a film version is in the works, and David Yates (Harry Potter series) is being tipped to take the reins.

For those unfamiliar with the series, the Wikipedia entry is below:

Fables is a comic book series created by writer Bill Willingham, published by DC Comics’s Vertigo imprint beginning in 2002. The series deals with various characters from fairy tales and folklore – referring to themselves as “Fables” – who have been forced out of their Homelands by “The Adversary” who has conquered the realm. The Fables have traveled to our world and formed a clandestine community in New York City known as Fabletown. Fables who are unable to blend in with human society (such as monsters and anthropomorphic animals) live at “the Farm” in upstate New York.

The television pilot is still apparently in production, with David Semel (Studio 60, Heroes) directing and Raven Metzner on writing duties. How the rumored film project would tie in with this, if at all, is anyone’s guess at this time. The graphic novel series also contained several stories over several issues, whether the film will concentrate on one of these or be a composite remains to be seen. Aside from the strong speculation on Yates, Gregory Noveck (Jonah Hex) is also said to be producing.
