If you’re bummed that David Lynch‘s 18-hour-or-so Twin Peaks epic might not return until 2017, why not stave off those bad feelings with hours (and hours and hours) of short films and featurettes from Missoula, Montana’s proudest son? Forget that these don’t get 35mm screenings at repertory theaters, lavish Blu-ray releases, or a Tumblr GIF set. These are not tossed-off, failed experiments (save for the endurance test known as DumbLand), but clear, unfiltered trips into his creative id.
The variety of options here is fantastic: they range from 57 seconds to upwards of an hour, running between narrative, documentary — in some cases making unclear what’s what — and even shooting formats. This is a beautiful, stirring collection, and not even the entirety of lesser-known Lynch treasures to be found out there. Those might be the subject of another post not so far down the line.
