Richard Linklater is more outspoken than most American directors of his generation, and we’re ever so grateful for it. Last year, the Austin Film Society let him host a series dedicated to ’80s cinema entitled “Jewels In the Wasteland,” which highlights arthouse cinema from a period most often thought of for its dinky blockbusters and low-budget comedies. The talks — which consisted of his introduction and a post-screening discussion with the Film Society’s members — were uniformly excellent.

Needless to say, another round of these is something we’re glad to have. This line-up may be even more impressive than the last crop, consisting of Blue Velvet, Stranger Than Paradise, The Green Ray, Sid & Nancy, Once Upon a Time In America, River’s Edge, and The Pope of Greenwich Village, along with some discussions that took place between postings about AFS. This is cinematic listening par excellence.
