Having been to Comic-Con two years in a row, San Diego and the annual nerdvana holds a special place in my heart. So of course I jumped at the chance to see Morgan Spurlock‘s newest documentary, Comic-Con: Episode IV – A Fan’s Hope, that lovingly explores just a handful of the personalities that flock there in late July. This behind-the-scenes look gives a glimpse of the chaos that occurs every year and everything that goes into it.
Some people come for dreams of getting noticed, others simply want to keep their businesses afloat by selling to the masses, while some just go for the hell of it. Last month I was lucky enough to have a Skype interview with Spurlock and one of the subjects, Holly Conrad, in which we discussed the negative things that have been lobbed at the convention for its distancing from comics each year, the reason he chose to follow people instead of just the event, the hurdles they had to overcome, and much more. Watch it below.
Plot Synopsis:
Have you ever imagined a place where Vulcans and vampires get along? Where wizards and wookies can be themselves? Welcome to Comic-Con San Diego. What started as a fringe comic book convention for 500 fans has grown into the pop culture event of the year that influences every form of entertainment, now attended by over 140,000. Comic-Con Episode Four: A Fan’s Hope explores this cultural phenomenon by following the lives of seven attendees as they descend upon the ultimate geek mecca.
Comic-Con: Episode IV – A Fan’s Hope hits VOD and LA theaters on Friday, April 6th. It will come to NY the following week and expand from there.
