After coming onto the scene with Sin Nombre and his adaptation of Jane Eyre, and before he gained major attention thanks to the first season of True Detective, director Cary Fukunaga became attached to a new version of Stephen King’s It. Said to be an ambitious two-part retelling of the horror story, there’s been spare updates in the last few years, with Fukunaga even going on to make another feature, Beasts of No Nation. Thankfully, it looks like the pieces are finally coming together.

Speaking with Vulture, producer Dan Lin says that it’ll be the director’s next film with a shoot occurring next year. “The idea is to start official prep in March for a summer shoot,” he says. “Cary likes to develop things for a while, and we’ve been with this for about three or four years, so we’re super excited that he stayed with it. You guys are gonna be really excited.”

Also confirmed is the ambitious structure as Lin says, “The book is so epic that we couldn’t tell it all in one movie and service the characters with enough depth.” As originally planned, the first film will tell the coming-of-age story of our characters and their dealing with the title character, while the second will follow them as adults.

With King approving the script — reportedly telling Fukunaga, “Go with God, please! This is the version the studio should make” – we’re greatly looking forward to the results. For now, however, let’s hope Fukunaga, who is only in taks to co-write the second film, will also come aboard as director.
