‘Freaks’ Trailer Introduces an Imaginative World of Sci-Fi Horror

Are you ready for some old-fashioned scares before the summer closes out? Following its world premiere at last year’s TIFF, Well Go USA Entertainment has unveiled the first intense trailer for Freaks, set for an August release. Directed by collaborators Zach Lipovsky and Adam B Stein, this psychological sci-fi bending thriller conveys the story of seven year old Chloe (Lexy Kolker) who has been locked in an abandoned house by her paranoid father (Emile Hirsch), protecting her from unseen horrors in the process. She is eventually persuaded into leaving her home by the mysterious Mr. Snowcone (Bruce Dern) discovering a bizarre and threatening new world seemingly unlike our own.

Jared Mobarak wrote in his review, “The film ultimately expands to encompass a worthwhile mythology with ample sequel potential…Fantasies and dreams crafted by a seven-year-old girl’s imagination give pause because the results of such interludes have a lasting effect on the future. And every little detail — straight down to a smiling child holding out a melting ice cream without caring that it’s pooling atop her hand — carries weight. Not a second is wasted.”

In this science-fiction thriller, a disturbed father (Emile Hirsch) locks his bold 7-year-old daughter (Lexy Kolker) in a house, warning her of grave dangers outside. But the mysterious Mr. Snowcone (Bruce Dern) convinces the girl to escape and join him on a quest for family, freedom, and revenge.

Freaks will open on August 23.
