However it turns out, there’s a hugely admirable level of ambition to Loving Vincent, a Vincent Van Gogh biopic that tells his story through interviews with those depicted in his paintings. It’s an intriguing idea as is, but what will undoubtedly be its selling point is the heart of its creation — around 100 painters created more than 56,000 paintings to form “the world’s first fully painted film.”
First results, provided in a one-minute trailer, are awfully beautiful and marked by a variety of forms, some of which is so impressive that it perhaps confirms the necessity of this massive endeavor. It’s still impossible to get the proper temperature for Loving Vincent, sure, but this quick peek raises my curiosity a great deal.
