Variety reports Tom Cruise has joined Denzel Washington in The Matarese Circle, the David Cronenberg-directed adaptation of the Robert Ludlum thriller. The film follows Cruise as he goes against Washington, bot bitter enemy spies who, after spending two decades trying to kill each other, team up against the Matarese, a powerful group at the root of a conspiracy. The script is written by Michael Brandt and Derek Haas (Wanted) which contemporizes Ludlum’s original Cold War premise. Production is looking to start this year, with a 2010 release.

Tom Cruise’s last efforts have been lacking, especially in Valkyrie. Washington is no different with the disappointing American Gangster and The Great Debators. Cronenberg has been on quite a streak though, so I’m confident he can get something great out of these two actors.

What do you think of the Cruise and Washington in a Cronenberg film?
