Just ahead of its July 16 release, David Lynch‘s next album, The Big Dream, is available to stream (in full!) from Pitchfork. By now, you have some idea of what to expect: we had brought you a video for the official single, “I’m Waiting Here,” and it was a promising glimpse into what the renaissance man was going for in his follow-up to 2011’s Crazy Clown Time. As a great admirer of that album, yours truly looks forward to digging in.
Before doing this, however, one may wish to investigate a couple of quotes from Lynch‘s daughter, Jennifer, with whom the blog Obnoxious and Anonymous (via BleedingCool and Welcome to Twin Peaks) spoke to last week. In their discussion, she let slip word — and this is brief, so forgive the build-up — of a “mind boggling […] next movie he’s trying to make,” in all likelihood the very same project which has ever-so-obliquely been referred to by known associates. Despite recent comments throwing the narrative of things slightly out of whack, the truth is that, right now, none of us can offer a reasonable guess as to what’s happening on that front. Hold out hope.
One last thing: there’s a video of the then-young Lynch taking part in an interview for a UCLA student project, circa 1979 — two years out from Eraserhead and only one from a more commercial breakout, The Elephant Man. Wait 30 seconds for audio to begin — the video is non-embeddable; click here to view — and enjoy a genuine artifact.
What do you think of Lynch’s new album? Does a film so much as seem possible, by this point?
