And the battle continues! Before you know it the rival Snow White films won’t even go through production and just the audition tapes will hit theaters this summer. Revealed in a press release, Relativity has battled Universal’s decision to move up Snow White and the Huntsman from December 2012 to June 2012. The studio has now set Tarsem‘s untitled Snow White project to March 16th, 2012, up from its late June release.
Universal’s film starring Charlize Theron, Kristen Stewart and Chris Hemsworth is considered darker, while Relativity’s film starring Julia Roberts, Lily Collins and Armie Hammer is lighter, more family fare. This is particularly interesting considering Tarsem’s attraction to darker material. It will now open next to 21 Jump Street and Contraband.
In other release date news, the next Nicholas Sparks adaptation, Safe Haven, will hit theaters June 1st, 2012. The film follows a “young woman escaping her past moves to a small North Carolina town, and falls for a loving widowed father. He heals her heart, and helps her escape the danger that threatens her.”
Relativity has also set a date for the next film from Clear and Present Danger, Patriot Games, and Salt director Phillip Noyce. Hunter Killer will hits theaters December 21st, 2012 and follows “an untested submarine captain who must work with a Navy SEAL team to rescue the Russian president, who has been taken prisoner during a military coup, in an effort to stop a rogue Russian General from igniting World War III.”
How do you think Universal will retaliate, if at all?
