Sicario-and-Cartel-Land

Denis Villenueve’s Sicario and Matthew Heineman’s Cartel Land are both about the U.S.-Mexico border and filled with bracing, white-knuckled imagery, but they’re companions on a philosophical level as well, heightening their respective battles into a microcosm of good vs. evil and bureaucracy vs. autonomy,” we noted last year, naming them one of the best double features of 2015.

We now have a great conversation with Roger Deakins, the illustrious Oscar-nominated cinematographer behind Sicario, and Heineman, who directed the Oscar-nominated documentary. Running just over 15 minutes, it features a brief glimpse at Deakins’ home (and some of his personal photos) before the No Country for Old Men DP discusses his early days as a documentarian and what he thought of Cartel Land. They also discuss the realism they tried to capture in both films, the benefits of digital in documentary, and much more.
