After taking on Charlotte Brontë a few years ago, Michael Fassbender is now set to enter the coveted world of William Shakespeare. While we’ve seen a variety actors, including Orson Welles, Sam Worthington, Toshiro Mifune, Ian McKellen, James McAvoy and Patrick Stewart, embodying the the role of Macbeth, it is now time for the Shame star to take on one of literature’s most iconic characters.
According to Screen Daily, the producers of the aforementioned film (and The King’s Speech) have brought to together Fassbender for a new adaptation, with Justin Kurzel set to direct. Breaking out with the stellar dark drama Snowtown, Kurzel is also set to adapt the John Le Carre thriller Our Kind of Traitor with Mads Mikkelsen, but it’s unknown which project will shoot first, as both are aiming to head into production this year.
Scripted by Todd Louiso and Jacob Koskoff, this iteration will tell the classic story of a Scottish lord who comes to power with his wife at his side (a part that is said to go with a leading Hollywood actress), and will take a “visceral” style with key battle scenes. It will not be a modern updates, however, as this take is set in the original language and in the 11th century. If you’ve seen Kurzel’s debut film, then chances are you are already quite excited for what he has in store for this new, dark take.
