While a variety of test screenings are underway for Sony Pictures’ American Hustle, the studio is concurrently ramping up the marketing with a new full-length trailer. While David O. Russell‘s Silver Linings Playbook follow-up — featuring Christian Bale, Bradley Cooper, Amy Adams, Jeremy Renner, Jennifer Lawrence, and Robert De Niro — would seem to have mostly skipped the festival route before its December bow, this new look has us anticipating the picture a good deal.
The period story follows Bale as Irving Rosenfeld, a con-man from the Bronx who gets entangled with FBI agent Richie DiMaso, played by Cooper. A fictional take on the 1970s FBI sting operation, Abscam, the film also follows Rosenfeld’s significant other and assistant, Sydney (Adams), as they encounter a web of the Mafia and New Jersey power brokers (the lattermost including Carmine Polito, played by Renner). While the first, snappy teaser took very little convincing to get us on board, this one reveals more of the story and exactly how these characters are intertwined — look for the quick shot of Louis C.K., while you’re at it — so it’s all the better that Russell‘s wit appears to have remained intact with this true-life tale.

American Hustle opens on December 13th in limited release and goes wide on December 25th.
What do you think of this trailer? Does Russell seem to have another winner on his hands?
