Budding ingédude (male ingénue, let’s make this a thing) Michael Angarano has been a regular facet on the film festival circuit of late with noteworthy roles in a variety of indie features, including Gentleman Broncos, The Art of Getting By and Red State. Yet his most intriguing effort was his portrayal of the impulsive, hopeless romantic at the center of Max Winkler’s underseen directorial debut Ceremony. There Angarano played Sam Davis, the younger half of a May-December romance (opposite Uma Thurman) with so much verve and humor that he was unsettling yet unceasingly engaging.
Happily, it looks like we’re not the only ones who noticed, as Variety reveals that Angarano’s been tapped for Craig Fisk’s The English Teacher, in which he’ll play a former student and current romantic interest to Julianne Moore‘s title character. Thankfully it looks like this May-December romance will tonally be a far cry from the deeply disturbing one featured in Moore’s incest-heavy indie drama Savage Grace. First off, The English Teacher is a comedy that begins when a failed playwright (Angarano) returns to his hometown and attracts the eye of his old English teacher. And aside from sharing some similarities to Jason Reitman’s soon to drop Diablo Cody-scripted comedy Young Adult, The English Teacher boasts a supporting cast that includes Nathan Lane and Greg Kinnear, and has a solid helmer in Zisk, who has directed such biting comedy series as Weeds and The United States of Tara. Basically, The English Teacher, which is set to shoot this month, seems to have a promising start.
