A question on the minds of film fans everywhere may finally be answered. Its been four years since director Jonathan Demme‘s last narrative feature film — the overlooked Rachel Getting Married — and now after testing the waters with a many potential projects, Variety has news on what he may tackle next.
The Silence of the Lambs director has become attached to yet another family drama following Rachel with Old Fires. The film, scripted by Heather McGowan (who hasn’t been involved with the film world since 2000’s rom-com Tadpole), takes a look at the story of an acclaimed architect who re-enters the real world after being in a coma. Assisted by his “snarky female physical therapist,” who is helping him in his rehabilitation, he attempts to reconnect with his children and get the love of his wife back.
This sounds like familiar, but strong, territory for the director — who has specifically stated he will never make another big-budget movie again. As he bounces around from Stephen King‘s recently released 11/22/63 to Dave Eggers‘ Zeitoun and even an Erin Brokovich-esque drama, as well as a few others, hopefully he just makes his mind up soon as I greatly look forward to whatever he ends up doing next.
Production on Old Fires is looking to kick off next summer for a hopeful 2014 release.
Do you hope this is Demme’s next film?
