Anyone remember Joaquin Phoenix on Letterman last year? Was it hoax? Was it a real meltdown? Does it matter?

Phoenix’s actions led to the financial un-success of the underrated Two Lovers (the film he was doing press for on Letterman that day), the actor’s retirement from the business and several unsuccessful, hysterical hip-hop performances around Los Angeles. And all of it was captured on camera by Casey Affleck. Interesting.

Now that footage has been cut down to feature length (entitled I’m Still Here: The Lost Year of Joaquin Phoenix) and has been bought to be distributed by Magnolia, to be released in theaters on September 10th. It’s a platform release, which depends solely on the limited success of the film every week previous.

Let’s all hope it gets some traction. This is certainly one of my most-anticipated films of the year.

Are you curious to see Joaquin Phoenix off in the deep end?
