Another John McAfee Film In the Works as ‘Running in the Background’ Gets Funding

In a world of Steve Jobs biopics, it was only a matter of time before another computer-oriented genius got his own feature.

According to THR, Montreal-based Impact Future Media has joined forces with Equinoxe Films to produce and distribute the feature — currently titled Running in the Background — based on the personal memoirs of John McAfee, inventor of the massively successful McAfee anti-virus software and founder of McAfee, Inc. In December, McAfee gave away his life story to Impact Future Media. The feature will start with McAfee‘s childhood and continue on to his current business endeavors.

Warner Bros. are also interested in McAfee‘s life, considering they’ve just picked up the rights to Wired magazine’s article, John McAfee’s Last Stand, written by Joshua Davis. John Requa and Glenn Ficarra (Crazy, Stupid, Love.) will be adapting that article for the rival project.

Here’s a little snippet of his most recent affairs: last April, his property in Belize was raided, where he was later arrested for unlicensed drug manufacturing and possession of an unlicensed firearm, but was later released uncharged. The following fall, he was questioned in regards to the murder of American expatriate Gregory Viant Faull, who happened to be his neighbor. McAfee was then under the assumption that the police were out to kill him, so he fled to Guatemala in midst of a media frenzy, before being deported to the U.S.

The project is budgeted for a hefty $28 million, and will be produced by Michael Mosca & Francesca Visconti. The former stated the following: “Although Mr. McAfee’s recent adventures have been widely publicized, the surface has barely been scratched regarding his life story.”
