Disney is betting big on Damon Lindelof, Lost co-showrunner and writer of the upcoming sci-fi projects Cowboys & Aliens, Prometheus and Star Trek 2. They’ve made a seven-figure deal for him to write and produce an “an original large-scale science fiction feature film” that appeals to family audiences. With a working title of 1952, plot details are nonexistent. They do want to turn it into a multiple platform property though, like any major franchise for the company. [Deadline]
Although Tron: Legacy wasn’t the huge sci-fi hit they expected (both critically and at the box-office) we did hear last week they are moving forward with a sequel. With sci-fi being the hot draw after Avatar‘s unparallelled success, it makes sense for them to pursue more than one possible franchise.
Lindelof’s project was hatched out of meetings with Disney’s production president Sean Bailey and senior exec Brigham Taylor. Fans of Lost should get excited, as this will be the first film Lindelof is “producing from the ground up.” While many were disappointed with the ending of ABC’s hit show, I thought Lindelof and team did a fantastic job at creating mystery-filled entertainment from week to week. I have faith for him to replicate his success in the feature film department. In the meantime, you can follow him on Twitter to keep up with his daily antics, including how much he loved J.J. Abrams‘ Super 8.
What do you think of Lindelof’s big project? What could 1952 allude to?
