Although she’s been around in fairytale form since the early 1800’s, Snow White returned to the spotlight this year in the family film Mirror Mirror and the edgier adventure fantasy Snow White and the Huntsman. A third adaptation of the story has landed and while it may be the smallest in scope, it’s looking to outdo this year’s entries in quality. Spain has picked Pablo Berger‘s black-and-white, silent film Blancanieves to contend at the Oscars this year and the first trailer has landed today.

Set in 1920s Spain we follow a young girl’s escape from her evil stepmother as she finds a new life as a matador. Thid gorgeous adaptation already premiered to positive reviews at TIFF and will land in limited release early next year. While it doesn’t have the same buzz as last year’s Oscar winner The Artist, hopefully it can find an audience and one check out the trailer below, thanks to /Film.

Blancanieves hits theaters on January 18th.
