With production for the upcoming Captain America sequel, currently subtitled The Winter Soldier, set to begin later this year, Marvel isn’t wasting anytime finalizing the project’s major components. With Community producers, Anthony and Joe Russo, set to direct the next installment, and Anthony Mackie hired to play the role of Sam Wilson (aka Falcon), that leaves at least one important role left to fill: the leading lady.
According to The New York Post (via BleedingCool), the three frontrunners for this very role are Anna Kendrick, Felicity Jones, and Imogen Poots. The role in question is Sharon Carter, niece of Peggy Cater — played by Hayley Atwell in the first installment — who is an important role and love interest to Captain America in the Winter Soldier comics.
Although the similarity in looks to the comic book character should play a part in who gets the role, that’s really not the main concern when it comes down to it — any one of them is capable of dying their hair or wearing a wig. I think they’re all worthwhile actresses, but Kendrick has, aside from the Twilight franchise, really shown the most with her acting potential.
On the other hand, Poots is the only one out of the three that has done some higher volume “action” in her projects, taking her roles in 28 Weeks Later and Fright Night into account. All in all, they’re all good actresses and anyone of them could bring something fresh to the role of Sharon.
Captain America: The Winter Soldier opens on April 4th, 2014.
