We thought it might stop by TIFF, but The Weinstein Company clearly made their focus The Imitation Game there (to winning results), and now it’s time for them to shift gears to Big Eyes. Featuring Tim Burton‘s return to more modestly budgeted features, the drama brings together Amy Adams and Christoph Waltz, and the first trailer has landed today for the Christmas-bound film.
Reteaming with Ed Wood writers Scott Alexander and Larry Karaszewski, the drama follows Waltz and Adams as Walter and Margaret Keane, a couple who achieved international recognition during the ’60s with their “pop-eyed paintings” amidst some internal controversy. Said dissension was the result of Margaret creating all of the work, but her husband, Walter, taking all the credit. Ahead of what we imagine will be a premiere at AFI Fest, check out the first trailer below for the film also starring Krysten Ritter, Jason Schwartzman, Danny Huston, and Terence Stamp.
Directed and produced by Tim Burton, BIG EYES is based on the true story of Walter Keane (Christoph Waltz), who was one of the most successful painters of the 1950s and early 1960s. The artist earned staggering notoriety by revolutionizing the commercialization and accessibility of popular art with his enigmatic paintings of waifs with big eyes. The truth would eventually be discovered though: Keane’s art was actually not created by him at all, but by his wife, Margaret (Amy Adams). The Keanes, it seemed, had been living a lie that had grown to gigantic proportions. BIG EYES centers on Margaret’s awakening as an artist, the phenomenal success of her paintings, and her tumultuous relationship with her husband, who was catapulted to international fame while taking credit for her work.
Big Eyes opens on December 25th.
