Despite what you many think of him as director, M. Night Shyamalan has proved to be an interesting figure on Twitter. Whether it is praising films like A Separation or The Tree of Life (what a coincidence, my top two of the year) or talking about how dolphins greeted him while jetskiing, he is one of the more compelling Hollywood types to follow. With production gearing up for his post-apocalyptic sci-fi adventure, After Earth, he has provided a number of updates regarding the project.
Below you can see a few images he tweeted, the first being a wall of art that is inspiring the film. He shared, “these are paintings and photos I’ve collected over the year. They are up on the inspiration wall in the art department of After Earth.” It is a striking collection, most recognizably including a still from Wong Kar-wai’s In The Mood For Love. If he has an ounce of that style here, you can call this project one of my most-anticipated of 2013.
Following that is an image, which he said. “This is Dean, an amazing illustrator. He’s illustrating an early scene from the film. (I’ve picked tantalizingly vague pictures haven’t I?)” Indeed, it looks like some sort of port of transport hub, but hopefully we’ll find out soon if the tweeting continues on set.
Aside form sharing that the “first two days of rehearsals went well” and “there are hundreds of people here working on stunts, sets, costumes, vfx… This place is buzzing,” the director also shared a photo from one of his on location sets featuring his production designer “standing in a redwood tree that has fallen over and split.” Check it out below.
After Earth, whose cast also includes the father-son duo of Will and Jaden Smith, as well as Zoë Kravitz, Sophie Okonedo and Isabelle Fuhrman, hits theaters June 7th, 2013.
What do you think of the concept art?
