David Ayer is a Hollywood talent that hasn’t quite explored other genres. After writing the cop drama Training Day, he went on to the cop drama Dark Blue. He then wrote the cop drama S.W.A.T. before writing and directing the cop drama Harsh Times. His latest film was the cop drama Street Kings. Sound familiar?

Well, Ayer just wrapped up production his latest film End of Watch, a cop drama starring Jake Gyllenhaal, Anna Kendrick, Michael Peña, America Ferrera, Natalie Martinez, Cody Horn and Frank Grillo. Collider visited the set and have the first two photos from the film.

The indie project will utilize the first person POV perspective (the rig which can be seen below) for a few scenes. The way they sell this concept seems a little silly, involving a character going to film school, but we’ll have to see if Ayer can have us buy into it. You can see one above of Gyllenhaal and one below of Pena, but I encourage you to to check out the site for more details on the project and the photos in hi-res.

Synopsis:

A powerful story of family, friendship, love, honor and courage, End Of Watch stars Academy Award nominee Jake Gyllenhaal and Michael Peña as young Los Angeles police officers Taylor and Zavala as they patrol the city’s meanest streets of south central Los Angeles.

Giving the story a gripping, first-person immediacy, the action unfolds entirely through footage from the handheld HD cameras of the police officers, gang members, surveillance cameras, and citizens caught in the line of fire to create a riveting portrait of the city’s darkest, most violent corners, the cops who risk their lives there every day, and the price they and their families are forced to pay.

End of Watch will hits theaters in 2012.

What do you think of this first look? Do you think the film will be better than your standard cop drama?
