Well, darn: I want to see a movie that stars Adam Sandler. Granted, about 60% of such an unusual desire stems from the involvement of reliable writer-director Thomas McCarthy (he of The Station Agent, The Visitor, and Win Win), 30% allotted for (as you’ll see) a supporting cast, and an irrepressible 10% being this writer’s hopes to see a genuinely talented dramatic actor break, once more, from the parade of crap he’s made his living off of for some time. (Permanently would be even finer, but, barring an Oscar win, those hopes are gone. Let’s take what can be received.)
Even when these circumstances are notwithstanding, things look good for McCarthy‘s next picture, The Cobbler — which, along with its star, has also slotted Dan Stevens (The Fifth Estate, Downton Abbey) — a round of casting updates only brightening the prospects. First off, TheWrap tell us Dustin Hoffman and longtime Sandler collaborator Steve Buscemi (how strange it is to type those words) are coming aboard, though anything regarding their involvement, plot-wise, is not divulged; the second update is, perhaps, of greater interest, with Method Man tweeting that he and Ellen Barkin have, too, been added to the picture.
As scripted by McCarthy, The Cobbler follows Sandler as that titular tradesman, in this instance a sort who “metaphysically step into the lives of the people whose shoes he repairs.” Voltage Pictures are behind the title, which is currently shooting in New York City; expect a fall 2014 release, likely with some festival stops along the way.
What do you make of these next additions to The Cobbler?
