Marvel just announced the direction they’re heading in when it comes to Captain America at Comic-Con, giving the sequel the title of Captain America: The Winter Soldier, It’s a given that Chris Evans and company will return (and most certainly Sebastian Stan as Chris Evans‘ sidekick Bucky, as he’ll be prominently featured in the storyline), but now we have an update on a newcomer to the franchise.

THR lets us know that Anthony Mackie is up for the role of Sam Wilson, or rather Falcon, a partner to Captain that hails from Harlem. The character is able to fly with increased strength thanks to his suit, as well as talk to birds. Although Mackie’s The Adjustment Bureau director George Nolfi was courted for the gig, Community producers Joe and Anthony Russo will be helming the follow-up, taking over for Joe Johnston.

No other details are known, but Mackie would be a great addition to this franchise and while an unlikely superhero, he could certainly shine if given some fun material. He recently took part in the disappointing Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter, but has a more promising role in this fall’s Gangster Squad. Check back for more Cap details as we get them, but things are off to a strong start for this “phase 2” Marvel project.
