Major news coming out of Hollywood today. Just moments ago Tony Gilroy signed to direct The Bourne Legacy. Now Deadline is reporting that 300 and Watchmen director Zack Snyder has been chosen to helm the upcoming Superman reboot. Producers Christopher Nolan and Emma Thomas came to a decision today.

While I would have liked to see Duncan Jones or Matt Reeves from the original shortlist grab it, Snyder makes the most sense. His blockbuster vision is apparent with every film and while I haven’t loved any of his work since Dawn of the Dead, I have faith with Christopher Nolan over his shoulder. If he can make CG owls realistically fly, I have no doubt he can make a live-action human do the same….Jon Hamm please?

UPDATE: Mike Fleming spoke with Snyder:

“I’ve been a big fan of the character for a long time, he’s definitely the king of all superheroes, he’s the one,” Snyder, who directed Watchmen and 300, told me. “It’s early yet, but I can tell you that what David and Chris have done with the story so far definitely has given me a great insight into a way to make him feel modern. I’ve always felt he was kind of awesome. I’ll finish Sucker Punch and get right at it.

Zack Snyder recently released The Legend of the Guardians and has Sucker Punch coming out in March 2011.

HeatVision also reports the villain for the film: General Zod. He is a supervillain whose abilities include superhuman strength, speed, stamina, senses, intelligence, regeneration, and longevity; super breath, heat vision, invulnerability, and flight. It’s going to be a hell of a fight.

Superman: The Man of Steel hits theaters Christmas 2012.
