Takashi Miike, the prolific Japanese provocateur responsible for countless films as Audition, Ichi the Killer and Visitor Q, is remaking a samurai classic by Iichi Kudo entitled Thirteen Assassins and it looks awesome.

Miike, known for his sporadic jumping between genres but better known for his gruesome hard hitting horror, is looking to return to the spotlight with this samurai tale about a group of assassins who band together on a secret suicide mission. The filmmaker is re-teaming with some key players in his career including scribe Daisuke Tengan, who wrote Audition, and Oscar® nominated producer Toshiaki Nakazawa who has worked with Miike on some of his best films including The Bird People in China, Yakuza Demon, and most recently the surreal cowboy-samurai satire Sukiyaki Western Django. Check out both the trailer for the original 1960 samurai film by Iichi Kudo as well as the revamped Miike one.
