With Colin Farrell attached to lead Len Wiseman‘s Total Recall remake, we’ve been waiting to hear how the rest of the cast will shape up. Last week we heard Kate Bosworth, Diane Kruger, Eva Mendes, Paula Patton, Jessica Biel, and Eva Green were on the shortlist for two of the female leads. Variety now reports we have our villain.

Emmy-winning Breaking Bad star Bryan Cranston has joined the film as a baddie. THR gives more details, as “the new story involves nation states Euromerica and New Shanghai, with Douglas Quaid (Farrell) a factory worker in the latter who begins to believe he is a spy, although he doesn’t know for which side.” Cranston will play Vilos Cohaagen, “the leader of Euromerica who, under the cover of protecting his people, is secretly readying an invasion of New Shanghai.”

Mark Bomback, James Vanderbilt, and Kurt Wimmer are credited with the screenplay that doesn’t take place on Mars, like the original. Producer Neil Moritz explained more details a few months back. Cranston should make a great villain and he will have a promising few years ahead. The actor stars in Tom Hanks Larry Crowne this summer and then Nicolas Winding Refn‘s Drive and Steven Soderbergh‘s Contagion this fall. Next March he has the much-anticipated live-action debut from Andrew Stanton, John Carter of Mars.

Total Recall will hit theaters August 3rd, 2012.
