The Fast and the Furious franchise just got a whole lot scarier. Jumping from horror films such as Saw, Insidious and this summer’s The Conjuring, director James Wan is nearing a deal to direct the seventh installment in the car racing-recently-turned-heist series. After Justin Lin decided to depart after Fast & Furious 6, Universal is looking to get the next film into theaters in the summer of 2014, and Wan is the man for the job, according to Deadline.
Known for a quick turnaround, after finishing The Conjuring for Warner Bros. he went right back to his Insidious franchise, resulting in two films being released in just a few months from each other later this year. Wan most notably gave us a thrilling single-shot car garage chase scene in Death Sentence, so we’re intrigued at what he can bring to this franchise. There’s no details on yet where this story will go, but we’ll likely get some hints next month with the new installment, as Vin Diesel and Paul Walker are set to return, while Dwayne Johnson and Tyrese are awaiting confirmation.
In other franchise-related news, the first film’s cinematographer, Ericson Core, has been set to direct a remake of Point Break. With shooting already planned to take place at the end of the year, the Invincible director will have a few months to put together a cast. They’ll be stepping into the shoes of Keanu Reeves and Patrick Swayze, who starred in Kathryn Bigelow‘s 1991 action thriller, which followed an undercover FBI agent taking down a criminal ring, all mixed into the world of extreme sports. Check out a trailer for the original film below, along with a new spot for the latest Fast & Furious.
Fast and Furious 6 lands on May 24th.
