The epic saga that is Sony’s big-screen adaptation of the video game hit Uncharted: Drake’s Fortune continues with today’s news that Neil Burger, the director of Limitless and The Illusionist, is now on board to write and direct the feature. [Variety-Showblitz]

After months of undue speculation, David O. Russell left the project and his script was tossed. With the director of the The Fighter out of the picture, there’s no word yet if Mark Wahlberg will remain in place. (I expect he won’t, but we’ll see.) If Wahlberg bows out, this could free up the role for fan-favorite Nathan Fillion.

Sony clearly wants to keep this project alive, given the popularity of the video games and the promise of the studio’s own Indiana Jones-ish franchise. But Neil Burger?

While the choice is surprising, it makes sense in a strange way. Burger’s previous films showed evidence of a strong, singular vision while providing solid commercial entertainment in way that was not pandering or vapid, all within a showcase of impressive visual acuity and strong performances. He reminds me of Stanley Kubrick, in a way – if Kubrick had given the remotest shit about his audience.

This news also signals Sony’s intention to start from scratch with this adaptation. Stay tuned for the next wave of casting/script news.

Do you think Neil Burger is a good fit for this material? Other than Joss Whedon, who do you think should write and direct this? And don’t say Joss Whedon!
