While Joss Whedon is up in Toronto International Film Festival debuting his micro-budget, black-and-white Shakespeare adaptation he shot in his backyard, Much Ado About Nothing, he was, of course, asked about something on the other end of the spectrum. As we know The Avengers helmer will be heavily involved in phase 2 of the Marvel Universe and now that filmmaker James Gunn has hopped on to one of those projects, the animated adventure Guardians of the Galaxy, Whedon spilled a bit of news to MTV.

Aside from flat-out confirming the Super director is indeed helming the film, he put his trust in the filmmaker, saying, “James is what makes me think it will work. I myself was sort of like, ‘Well, I liked Rocket Raccoon as a kid, but I’m not sure how that plays [to a wider audience].’ He added that Gunn  “is so off the wall, and so crazy, but so smart, such a craftsman and he builds from his heart.”

Although the director has “barely” even started on the script, he’s got “a very twisted take on it, but it all comes from a real love for the material. It’s going to be hard for the humans to keep up.” Whedon wraps up saying, “I know he’s going to come from left field and I’m going to go, ‘What?’ And then, ‘Of course, why didn’t I think of that?’ And then I’m going to beat him!” Check out the conversation below as we look forward to see what Gunn comes up with.
