In his relatively short career, Ben Wheatley has taken his audience on experiences that few other directors can provide. After his increasingly frightening Kill List, he entered dark comedy territory with the recent Sightseers and now he’s taking us on a trip of a whole different variety. Heading back to the Civil War, A Field in England follows a group of soldiers who stumble upon a mushroom field and go insane.

Following the first trailer another alternate, psychedelic one has landed ahead of a U.K. release next month. Feeding our anticipation, Total Film got to check it out early and said it’s Wheatley’s “strangest movie yet: mysticism, mystification and magic mushrooms in a English Civil War setting. Often confusing, occasionally infuriating – but audaciously original.” It certainly matches up with the new trailer, which can be seen below.

Synopsis:

England during the English Civil War. A small group of deserters flee from a raging battle through an overgrown field. They are captured by two men: O’Neil and Cutler. O’Neil (Michael Smiley), an alchemist, forces the group to aid him in his search to find a hidden treasure that he believes is buried in the field. Crossing a vast mushroom circle, which provides their first meal, the group quickly descend into a chaos of arguments, fighting and paranoia, and, as it becomes clear that the treasure might be something other than gold, they slowly become victim to the terrifying energies trapped inside the field.

A Field In England hits everywhere in the U.K. on July 5th with a U.S. roll-out coming from Drafthouse Films soon after.
