Following up her pair of Oscar-winning dramas, The Hurt Locker and Zero Dark ThirtyKathryn Bigelow is going from international war to conflict in the heart of America with her next project. Re-teaming with Mark BoalDetroit is set during the 5-day riots that took place there in 1967, and will explore the systemic racism of the city. The citizen uprising left 43 people dead, nearly 1,200 injured, and over 2,000 establishments destroyed. Ahead of a release this summer, the first trailer has now been released.

With a release timed for the event’s 50th anniversary, it also marks the arrival of a new distributor. Megan Ellison‘s Annapurna Pictures, who backed Bigelow’s last film, have now become a fully-fledged distributor and are making this their first release. Considering how eclectic their producing tastes have been, hopefully this development brings renewed life back to the theatrical prospects of these mid-budget, adult-geared dramas.

Starring John Boyega, Jack Reynor, Will Poulter, Ben O’Toole, Hannah Murray, Anthony Mackie, Jacob Latimore, Kaitlyn Dever, Jason Mitchell, Algee Smith, Joseph David-Jones, and John Krasinski, check out the trailer and poster below.

From the Academy Award winning director of THE HURT LOCKER and ZERO DARK THIRTY, DETROIT tells the gripping story of one of the darkest moments during the civil unrest that rocked Detroit in the summer of ‘67.
