If there is one studio to own the week thus far, it is without a shadow of doubt, The Weinstein Company. Before this morning’s unveiling of Andrew Dominik‘s Killing Them Softly (our review) at Cannes, the first glorious teaser for Paul Thomas Anderson‘s The Master was released. In between that they had a presentation, showing off more from their Philip Seymour Hoffman/Joaquin Phoenix drama, a look at David O. Russell‘s Silver Linings and then the first footage from Quentin Tarantino‘s Django Unchained. We wrapped it all up, but new information has been revealed about the upcoming spaghetti western.
Kurt Russell and Sacha Baron Cohen both recently left the project due to scheduling and other issues, but there has been no word about replacements or if Tarantino will be cutting any parts. We now have a hint, as head honcho Harvey Weinstein spoke to Deadline, saying that they “may be adding a couple of surprise co-stars” to the film, since there is still about a month to go on production. With that said, I’m curious as to the production schedule, if they can just pop in actors here and there. Hopefully we’ll hear word from the set soon.
Since there is still a month to go, that fact also brings news of when we will not see the film. We know it will hit wide release on Christmas day this year, but some thought it could arrive as early as Toronto or Venice film festivals. That is not the case, as Weinstein simply said it will not be ready. He did, however, leave the option that The Master or The Silver Linings Playbook could bow on the fall festival circuit, so we can certainly look forward to that.
