With official news that Rob Marshall is directing Pirates of the Carribean: On Stranger Tides with Johnny Depp just out in the open comes further news that Disney’s McG-steered Captain Nemo film is dead in the water, with no McG or start date or cast to speak of (not that there was ever a cast). The film was set to start filming in February. [Variety]Disney appears to be focused on Stranger Tides, with shooting set for this coming May. Whether or not this is a direct result of the Mouse’s recent regime change (from Dick Cook to Rich Ross) is uncertain. But it’s not surprising either way. It hasn’t been the best year for Disney (especially lately, a la Surrogates and A Christmas Carol), so it only makes sense to fall back on a pirate named Depp for some much-needed help.

Not that a Nemo-centric 20,000 Leagues, perhaps more close to the Jules Verne book and complimenting graphic novels, wouldn’t have been new and different. But who needs that now-a-days?

What do you think of this Nemo news?
