Judging from Ben Wheatley‘s career thus far, it’s only appropriate that we’re getting news on his next projects before his latest even arrives in North America. Following last year’s Kill List, this year’s Sightseers and A Field In England (which hit U.K. this year and slated for a U.S. release from Drafthouse Films, likely in 2014), news has come in today about another one of his upcoming works, with perhaps his finest source material yet.
According to Screen Daily, the director has signed on to shoot an adaptation of the late JG Ballard‘s 1975 novel High Rise, coming from a script by frequent collaborator Amy Jump. This will fill up the helmer’s schedule next year, as he’ll not only shoot this project, but also his police versus creature adventure picture Freakshift. As for High Rise, the satirical project tracks people in a tower block that descend into chaos, something perfectly fitting for the helmer. Check out an expanded synopsis below for the project that was once in the hands of Vincenzo Natali.
Set in a luxury high-rise building, the book follows a group of affluent tenants hell-bent on an orgy of destruction. Cocktail parties degenerate into marauding attacks on ‘enemy’ floors and the once-luxurious amenities become an arena for technological mayhem. Human society slips into violent reverse as the inhabitants of the ultra-modern high-rise, driven by primal urges, recreate a world ruled by the laws of the jungle.
Are you looking forward to both of these Wheatley projects?
