With no Transformers sequel next year, there isn’t a 2012 film that has spent as much money on something that looks so stupid. Peter Berg and Universal Pictures will deliver Battleship, a feature film based on the popular boardgame. The action blockbuster stars Taylor Kitsch, Liam Neeson, Alexander Skarsgard, Rihanna, Hamish Linklater and Brooklyn Decker.

This new piece ups in the inane ante from the first trailer, as we get a full-on glimpse at our aliens, skyscraper destruction, Rihanna’s acting attempts and more. The water effects look great, but that is a sad predicament for your film when that is the biggest takeaway. Berg is at least a better director than Bay, so hopefully he can craft a more entertaining film as he looks to borrow many of his techniques here. Check out the latest trailer below via Apple.

Synopsis:

Peter Berg (Hancock) produces and directs Battleship, an epic-scaled action-adventure that unfolds across the seas, in the skies and over land as our planet fights for survival against a superior force. Inspired by Hasbro’s classic naval combat game, Battleship stars Taylor Kitsch as Lt. Alex Hopper, a Naval officer assigned to the USS John Paul Jones; Brooklyn Decker as Sam Shane, a physical therapist and Hopper’s fiancee; Alexander Skarsgard as Hopper’s older brother, Stone, Commanding Officer of the USS Sampson; Rihanna as Petty Officer Raikes, Hopper’s crewmate and a weapons specialist on the USS John Paul Jones; and international superstar Liam Neeson as Hopper and Stone’s superior (and Sam’s father), Admiral Shane.

Battleship hits theaters May 18th, 2012 in 3D.
