When all was said and done, despite all the explosions, capes and major comedies, the best studio movie of the summer was easily Steven Soderbergh‘s Magic Mike. It was also perhaps the most profitable, bringing in over $150 million on just a $7 million budget, so when news of a sequel started flying around, no one was surprised. But with Steven Soderbergh taking an extensive break from filmmaking, what does that mean for the future of the film?

The German site Film Starts sat down with both star Channing Tatum and Reid Carolin, who produced the film with the actor, and we’ve got a hint at where things might go. Remember this is translated by yours truly, so if any German-speaking readers want to chime in I’d be happy to update the story. First of all, they hint that the film will see our group of strippers hit the road and it would be” very funny and ridiculous.” The only the problem lies with the timing and schedules of all involved.

They would love to have Soderbergh back, but with his confirmed break, they may have to search for another director. The duo entertain the possibility of Gregory Jacobs, who has been assistant director on nearly all of Soderbergh’s films since the early ’90s and last directed the Emily Blunt-starring Wind Chill, taking the reigns. Or perhaps even Carolin and Tatum would direct themselves, as they certainly know this world and the latter has much experience with Soderbergh in recent years. They admit this is a long ways off and say a Broadway show is in the cards first, but I wouldn’t mind this possibility even though few can replicate Soderbergh’s style.

Do you want to see a Magic Mike 2? Who would you want to see direct?
