It would be safe to say Julia Roberts is in a transitional period of her career. And while she no longer draws the crowd she once did, she’s proven she’s got a bit more going for her than that big ole smile (watch Duplicity or Closer, AVOID Larry Crowne for proof of this).

She’s got what looks to be a fun little villain role in Tarsem’s upcoming Mirror Mirror, which will hopefully be a bit of a departure for the actress.

After that, Roberts is attached to produce and star in Second Act, a film about “a woman who has never worked and is forced to take a job.” [THR] The project currently has no script or director, which doesn’t help what sounds like an extremely dated workplace pitch. A woman with no job forced to get one? Really? We’re still making those films? We didn’t peak with Private Benjamin 30 years ago? Okay then.

I’m crossing my fingers Roberts does what Cameron Diaz couldn’t in Bad Teacher, and offer a dose of charm to a generally unlikeable character. Now that would be a departure.

What do you think of Julia Roberts? Is she still a movie star?
