Because you asked for it, The Weinstein Company announced on their Facebook that plans are in place for a fifth installment in the Scary Movie franchise [First Showing]. As of right now, there’s only that simple announcement; no writer/director team (I’m sure David Zucker isn’t that busy), no one cast (fingers crossed they bring back Anna Faris though since she’s the face of the franchise), no release date, no NOTHING. You can either get excited for this or do what I’m sure most movie fans will do: take this announcement as a warning of things to come and start preparing the fallout bunker.

For me, I’m on the side of “cool, can’t wait.” I grew up on spoof movies and still love them to this day, and the Scary Movie franchise is the only one that comes close to getting it right. It’s easy to look like the kings of the spoof pack when you have Friedberg/Seltzer as your only rivals and they do nothing but churn out crap, but I digress. I wonder what they’d lampoon though; everything’s a remake now and there’s no real fresh material outside of Paranormal Activity to make fun of. I just hope they don’t fall into the “pop culture reference in place of a joke” spell; I get enough of that from the aforementioned Friedberg/Seltzer team.

Is your interest piqued by a 5th Scary Movie or is this just a wave I’m going to have ride by myself? It’s lonely, don’t make me go out there alone.
