Celebrating its 30th anniversary last year, Godfrey Reggio‘s groundbreaking, stunning documentary Koyaanisqatsi paved the way for his two follow-ups and now, over a decade since the last entry, we finally have a new film from the director. Featuring, once again, an original score by Philip Glass, Steven Soderbergh is on board as a presenter for Visitors and today we have a new trailer for the film.
Featuring a preview of the score, we’re led through 3 entrancing shots (medium close-ups on a crowd of people, a stark, beautiful landscape, and a falling dummy), which is a portion of the 74 total shots contained in the documentary. We were mixed on the film at TIFF, saying in our full review, “Reggio is tapping into the essence of faith and internal understanding with Visitors — and, whether he made it with specific meaning or not, the picture will find itself met with as many varied reactions as it gets viewers. I, sadly, wasn’t one of its champions, and doubt the general film-going public will be either.”
One will get a chance to see if they connect with the style, as the project is set for an initial roll-out in New York City on January 24th, then heading off to Seattle on February 7th and Los Angeles the following week, before a nationwide roll-out. In the meantime, check out the trailer below and the first one here if you missed it.
Thirty years after KOYAANISQATSI, Reggio once again leapfrogs over earth-bound filmmakers and has created another mesmerizing, wordless portrait of modern life. VISITORS reveals humanity’s trancelike relationship with technology, which, when commandeered by extreme emotional states, produces massive effects far beyond the human species. The film is visceral, offering the audience an experience beyond information about the moment in which we live. Comprised of only seventy-four shots, it takes viewers on a journey to the moon and back to confront them with themselves.
