Sommeliers hone their skills in the wine cellars of fine gourmet restaurants, and are rarely seen by a general public happy to drink whatever merlot is available at the local Olive Garden. A trailer for the new documentary Somm was just released, and it examines this elusive breed of professionals by showing just what it takes to become one of the best in the world.

In director Jason Wise’s feature debut, a small, select group of wine experts try to join the ranks of the world’s few Master Sommeliers. To enter the super exclusive club, they must pass a rigorous exam that covers every aspect of wine, a challenge that could drive some to the breaking point. The film joins a new batch of food porn documentaries that include the acclaimed Jiro Dreams of Sushi, but unlike that understated work, Somm seems like it takes a more dramatic approach. The way the trailer is edited, it looks more like the promo for a Food Network reality show where insults are hurled and tempers flare as the pressure mounts. Considering the sophisticated foodie audience to which this film is targeted, I hope it stays on course and doesn’t turn into a petty, pinot-soaked mess. See trailer and synopsis via iTunes below:

Synopsis:

SOMM takes the viewer on a humorous, emotional and illuminating look into a mysterious world—the Court of Master Sommeliers and the massively intimidating Master Sommelier Exam. The Court of Master Sommeliers is one of the world’s most prestigious, secretive, and exclusive organizations. Since its inception almost 40 years ago, less than 200 candidates have reached the exalted Master level. The exam covers literally every nuance of the world of wine, spirits and cigars. Those who have passed have put at risk their personal lives, their well-being, and often their sanity to pull it off. Shrouded in secrecy, access to the Court Of Master Sommeliers has always been strictly regulated, and cameras have never been allowed anywhere near the exam, until now. How much do you think you know about wine? SOMM will make you think again.

Somm begins its limited release on June 21st.

Do you think Somm would appeal to anyone other than wine lovers?
