The story follows Hester Collyer, a 40 year old woman who separates from her loving husband because of the emotional shackles of her sexually abusive relationship with an alcoholic ex-fighter pilot. The brutality of the subject matter escalates as the story unfolds.
Even amidst this sexually violent era of cinema Deep Blue Sea will seemingly test the waters for what is socially acceptable in film. Brutal subject matter without a hint of irony or humor is often met with the cold shoulder from movies goers. That being said, I think an actress as talented and enchanting as Rachel Weisz may be just the thing to make this rifting tale relatable enough so that the audience can empathize with her character. With an effortless charisma that hearkens back to the golden era of cinema and intoxicating looks to match Weisz captivates audiences both male and female alike. She is no stranger to challenging roles, but Rachel has yet to garner both critical and commercial success since her performance in The Constant Gardener. I am confident that her best is still to come and looking forward to what could be a truly career defining role in Deep Blue Sea.
